Dog Vaccination
At Hallam Park Animal Hospital, we provide comprehensive vaccination services for dogs and puppies. Vaccinations are a crucial part of preventative healthcare, limiting the spread of infections and protecting your pets against potentially life-threatening diseases. We recommend you keep up to date with your dog’s vaccinations throughout its whole life. Vaccinations are generally safe and have very low risks. Some pets may experience slight lethargy, mild fever or reduced appetite 24 hours after the vaccine but severe reactions are rare.
Here’s a list of common canine diseases that are prevented or minimized through vaccination:
- Canine Distemper: Causes fever, respiratory issues, neurological problems
- Canine Hepatitis: Cause liver damage, jaundice, fever
- Canine Parvovirus: Causes severe vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration
- Parainfluenza: Causes respiratory issues (part of kennel cough)
- Bordetella Bronchiseptica: Causes persistent coughing (kennel cough)
We have two vaccines available at Hallam Park Animal Hospital:
- C3 vaccine: Core vaccine covering distemper, hepatitis, and parvovirus. This will be injected under the skin typically over your dog’s neck in their scruff.
- C5 vaccine: C3 + Protection against parainfluenza and bordetella bronchiseptica (kennel cough). This will be administered into their mouth or nose for complete protection.
To start the vaccination course your dog will need two vaccinations within 4 weeks of each other. In puppies we recommend having three vaccinations to ensure complete and total protection.
We strongly recommend that unvaccinated puppies avoid contact with other dogs or communal areas (such as parks and pavements) until they have received their full vaccination series. Puppies are only fully protected against the above diseases two weeks after their third vaccination. However, controlled environments where only vaccinated dogs are present can be beneficial for socialisation before this time, allowing your puppy to interact with others in a safe and supervised setting. This approach helps strike a balance between ensuring your puppy’s safety and providing the necessary socialisation for healthy development.
Primary Puppy Vaccination Course:
- 6-8 weeks: First vaccination (C3)
- 10-12 weeks: Second vaccination (C5)
- 14-16 weeks: Third vaccination (C3)
- Annual boosters thereafter
After these primary vaccinations, an annual booster is all that is needed to keep your pet safe and up to date.
Remember, vaccinating your pet is essential for their health and the well-being of the pet community. Regular vaccinations are a key part of responsible pet ownership.
