French bulldogs, Pugs & bulldogs

Brachycephalic breeds are dogs with a distinctive short, flat, and broad skull shape, characterized by a shortened muzzle and wide, flattened face. This unique facial structure gives brachycephalic breeds their distinctive, endearing appearance, but it often comes with significant health challenges. Common brachycephalic breeds, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs, frequently suffer from anatomical issues like narrowed nostrils (stenotic nares), an elongated soft palate, everted laryngeal saccules, and a hypoplastic trachea. These conditions collectively result in a constricted airway, often referred to as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which can cause labored breathing, snoring, and exercise intolerance. In addition to respiratory concerns, brachycephalic breeds may also experience dental issues, eye problems, and an increased risk of heatstroke due to their compromised ability to regulate temperature effectively.

At Hallam Park Animal Hospital, we recognize the unique challenges that brachycephalic breeds face due to their distinct facial structure, and we are committed to providing tailored care that meets their specific needs. From monitoring their respiratory health to managing potential risks like heatstroke, dental issues, and eye problems, we take a proactive approach to ensure their well-being. Our experienced team is dedicated to offering compassionate and specialised care to help these breeds live healthy, comfortable lives, with a focus on their safety and long-term health. Our very own Nurse Pran has a deep love for French Bulldogs and is passionate about ensuring the highest quality of care for all brachycephalic breeds. With her expertise and commitment, she goes above and beyond to provide tailored care, from monitoring respiratory health to managing the unique challenges these breeds face. Pran’s dedication ensures that every brachycephalic pet receives the special attention they need to lead a happy, healthy life.

Our team not only diagnose but also perform surgical corrections for various BOAS-related issues, including:

  • Rhinoplasty: Widening the nostrils to enhance airflow and improve breathing.
  • Staphylectomy: Shortening the elongated soft palate to prevent airway obstructions.
  • Laryngeal Saccule Resection: Removal of everted laryngeal saccules to open up the airway and reduce respiratory strain.

These procedures are designed to alleviate breathing difficulties and improve the quality of life for brachycephalic breeds.

We also take extra precautions when managing anesthesia for brachycephalic breeds, carefully tailoring our approach to their unique anatomical challenges. Through thorough pre-anesthetic assessments, customized anesthesia protocols, and continuous monitoring, we ensure the safety and well-being of these patients throughout any surgical procedure, minimizing risks and optimizing their comfort.

Our comprehensive approach includes not only surgical solutions for respiratory issues but also proactive management of other common concerns like dental and eye problems, as well as heat sensitivity. With a focus on individualized care, we work to enhance the quality of life for these lovable pets, helping them lead active, comfortable, and healthy lives. Whether through specialized treatments, careful monitoring, or tailored anesthesia protocols, our team is here to support your brachycephalic pet every step of the way.
